Broadway's Wicked musical is a loose adaptation of Wicked the novel by Gregory Maguire. Wicked the musical offers a "back-story" to the Wizard of Oz. Long before Dorothy joins the story we follow the journey of two young girls on their path that would lead them to become the iconic personas Glinda (the Good Witch of the North) and Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the East). Elphaba is born a bright shade of green and thus lives her life as an outsider. In college she ends up rooming with the popular Glinda. Their buddy story is only one of several storylines and subplots in a carefully constructed, surprise-filled musical adventure.

Wicked premiered in October 2003 on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre. It was produced by Universal Pictures and directed by Joe Mantello, with musical staging by Wayne Cilento. The Broadway production's success spawned productions in Chicago, Los Angeles, London's West End and San Francisco, as well as international productions in Japan, Germany, Australia and elsewhere, and two North American tours that have visited over thirty cities in Canada and the United States.
